Counselling Tools

Typically, a counselling tool is a series of infographic sheets to help topically guide the counsellor in a real-time. In other words, the ‘ins and outs’ of forgiveness (for example) are available to the counsellor while he/she works with a client.  In this way, the whole academically grounded process is laid out before the counsellor for easy reference. Other tools, such as story cards are designed to help you client tell his or her unique story in a safe and non-threatening way. They are designed to help the counsellor, therapist and coach to help the client journey to a successful outcome. These tools are distributed in a PDF format.

These tools are popular among pastors, church leaders, students, counsellors, therapists and coaches. #worksmart

Forgiveness (also available in Afrikaans)

10 Pages. Scripturally grounded forgiveness centres on the grace, mercy and love of God in hurting situations; where the story of God can outweigh the story of pain is a definite possibility. This tool respectfully facilitates four questions in addition to grounding the challenge in Christ:

  1. Who did it?
  2. What was done?
  3. What are the consequences or losses arising?
  4. What can be done about it?

Guide your client to dismiss myths about forgiveness and teach them how to forgive in a way that is biblically true and therefore, God-honouring.

Story Cards

Have you ever had a client that is “stuck?” where the client is struggling to verbalize his or her challenge or scenario. Story cards help the client to safely tell his or her story and at the same time, it helps the counsellor/therapist/coach to understand the story and world of the client.

A must-have tool!

Narrative Therapy

Our lives are ‘storied’ and the events that have influenced our stories can be either positive or negative.  The words used by people have also influenced who we have become. Narrative therapy explores the stories we tell ourselves with a view to healing and wholeness.

  1. Tools are created to assist the helper to explore the client’s life narrative.
  2. Space is allowed for creative application.
  3. Entangling stories that have become intertwined.
  4. To help the client to author a new story about who they are and are becoming.

Trauma (also available in Afrikaans)

These tools and techniques have a twofold aim:

  1. Assist the counsellor to guide a victim of trauma successfully through the process of trauma debriefing.
  2. Empower the victim or client and to create a safe environment for themself.

Trauma is comprehensively and safely dealt with through various lenses: factually, cognitively, emotionally and stressful reactions.
