Some Christians are getting caught up in debates about the origins, meaning and practices of Valentine’s Day and perhaps there is a place for this. On the other hand, maybe it’s time for a quick “check-in” … everything belongs to God and He is far greater than any pagan god or practice.
Since February 14th belongs to God and there is a connotation of love attached to the day, why not use this Godly day to honour Him by revisiting and celebrating the Godly love and perfect union between husband and wife?
Rediscover, for example, the Song of Songs (NIV):
- “1:2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth— for your love is more delightful than wine.
- 4:10 How delightful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much more pleasing is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your perfume more than any spice!
- 4:11 Your lips drop sweetness as the honeycomb, my bride; milk and honey are under your tongue. The fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon.
- 7:2 Your navel is a rounded goblet that never lacks blended wine. Your waist is a mound of wheat encircled by lilies.
- 7:8 I said, ‘I will climb the palm tree; I will take hold of its fruit.’ May your breasts be like clusters of grapes on the vine, the fragrance of your breath like apples,”
Quite erotic? Actually, the Bible has much to say on love, and perhaps we need to spend more time exploring the topic. Love is after all alive and therefore needs nourishment so that it thrives and glorifies God. So, husband and wives, come February 14th, plan to honour God with your love for one another.
